Jacksdale Primary & Nursery School: Promoting Equality and Inclusion

As a maintained primary school, Jacksdale Primary & Nursery School is committed to upholding the Public Sector Equality Duty and ensuring that all members of our community are treated with respect, dignity, and fairness. Our core values of safe, kind, and respect are the foundation upon which we build an inclusive and welcoming environment for our pupils, staff, and the wider community.

Policies and Practises that Promote Equality

We have a range of policies in place that explicitly address our commitment to equality of opportunity. These include our British Values, Accessibility Plan, Equality Policy, SEND Policy, Behaviour and Anti-Bullying Policy, and Religious Education Policy. These policies outline our approach to actively promoting diversity, celebrating difference, and ensuring that all individuals can participate fully in the life of the school.

Embedding Equality in our Curriculum and School Life

Our dedication to equality is woven throughout our curriculum and school activities. Some of the ways we put this into practice include:

  • Diverse Representation in English Resources: We carefully select high-quality texts that feature a wide range of characters, perspectives, and experiences to support our English teaching.
  • PSHE and RSHE Curriculum: These subjects are central to our approach, encouraging pupils to explore themes of diversity, tolerance, and mutual respect. Our view which is shared and promoted with the children is 'One Love'.
  • Assemblies and Discussions: We regularly host assemblies and discussions that explore national and international news stories, as well as celebrate a variety of cultural, religious, and social events.
  • Whole Class and the Teaching of Reading: Our daily whole class reading sessions expose pupils to a diverse range of authors, characters, and key events.
  • Pupil Voice: We actively seek out the views and experiences of all our pupils to ensure that everyone's voice is heard and valued.

Monitoring and Evaluating our Approach

To ensure that we are truly meeting the needs of all our pupils, we closely monitor and evaluate the attainment and progress of different groups, including those who share protected characteristics. Where necessary, we implement targeted interventions to maximise the progress of all learners.

We also keep detailed records of extra-curricular participation to ensure that all children are encouraged and supported to attend, participate, and represent the school.

Promoting Positive Behaviour and Attendance

Our Behaviour and Anti-Bullying Policy is actively promoted, and we regularly monitor patterns and concerns to identify and address any issues related to particular groups. Similarly, we closely monitor attendance to identify and support any groups that may be experiencing challenges.

At Jacksdale Primary & Nursery School, we are committed to creating an inclusive, equitable, and welcoming environment for all. By embedding our core values of safe, kind, and respect throughout our policies, curriculum, and school life, we strive to ensure that every member of our community is valued and makes a valuable contribution to our school and their community so that they are the very best that they can be.
