Welcome back!
Welcome back to the 2024-25 academic year - and welcome back to Year 6!
It has been great to welcome the children back to school. They have started this year with such enthusiasm and determination. Many staff members have already commented on the positive attitudes and manners of our Year 6s, which is great to hear!
What are we up to?
English
In our guided reading lessons, we are studying the novel ‘Viking Boy’ by Tony Bradman. We will be studying lots of vocabulary, particularly vocabulary specific to the Viking period. In our writing lessons, we are currently focussing on descriptive writing and sentence structure. Our first piece of independent writing will be a piece of descriptive writing about a Viking setting. Future units this term will include a narrative piece and a biased or balanced argument considering whether the Viking justice system was fair or not.
Maths
We follow the White Rose scheme for maths and our first unit will be on place value, followed by work on addition and subtraction. Children will be able to access Times Table Rock Stars at home and will have their log in details shortly.
Topic
We’re very excited to start our new history based topic, ‘The Vikings.’ We will investigate the perception of the Vikings and consider how they gained their reputation. We will look into everyday Viking life and learn about their travels and trades with other countries and cultures. After half term, we will be visiting the Jorvik Viking Centre in York after half term: more details about this shortly. Our Art unit this half term will involve developing our watercolour skills, with the children producing a watercolour painting of a Viking longboat on the ocean. Our geography lessons will see us learn about the water cycle and study rivers. In PE, we will be developing lots of skills, including catching, throwing and balance, and then putting these into practice in games. We will introducing the children to orienteering as part of our PE lessons, using the courses we have on the school site, the welfare and the nature reserve.
