Welcome to 1CG!

We are Year 1.  Our teachers are Mrs Clements and Mrs Gray.  Our teaching assistants are Miss Kennedy and Mrs Charles.

Reading is a key aspect in Year 1.  Children take part in RWI sessions everyday where they read to a teacher and to a partner.  We also have whole class guided reading sessions each week.  Children take home books to share with parents/carers at home.  These reading books are changed once a week on a Monday when we have seen a comment in the reading dairy.  Please try to read at least three times a week, more if you can.  It has shown that reading regularly at home helps with children's progress.

In Year 1 children take part in daily phonic sessions.  These sounds then help the children to read and spell.  The sounds are split up into 3 sets.  In Year 1 we are learning sets 2 and 3.  Each session starts off with a speed sounds lesson which focuses on learning a new sound.  After this the children apply what they have learnt by reading a book containing the sounds.  The children also talk about what they have read.  The children then move onto a writing task where they use the sounds learnt to spell words.  The children love these sessions and we have seen fantastic progress being made.  Find below a list of sounds we are leaning in Year 1.

Set 1, 2 and 3 speedsounds

In Year 1 we would like the children to practice skills they have learnt in school at home.  This will be in phonics (sounds), reading, spelling and maths.  Each half term a grid will be stuck into your child’s homework book with things your child needs to practice. This supports the work the children are doing in class that term.  Please feel free to use the book for any practising e.g to practice writing spellings, writing numbers etc.

We have also included an optional creative homework which is linked to our topic work, which you may wish to do.  If you do choose to complete 1 of these ideas please send into school on the date provided.

Your child’s homework book needs to be returned to school by the last day of each half term.

Spelling is an ongoing skill in Year 1.  Children have daily spelling practice in our Phonic sessions.  Children have also got spellings to learn at home.  Children have a login to the spelling shed, where they can play games to support the learning of their spellings.

P.E will be on a Tuesday and Thursday. Please can children come to school dressed in their FULL PE kit consisting of blue or black shorts or jogging bottoms, white t-shirt and plimsolls or trainers. Children will need to wear their school jumper over the top.  Children are not allowed to wear any jewellery for PE and long hair must be tied back.

Happy World Book Day 2022. We have had a lovely afternoon celebrating World Book Day. We watched some of the Teachers on the Interactive Whiteboard read us a story and the we enjoyed doing some World Book Day activities linked to the stories. We did a Scavenger hunt from the story The Very Hungry Caterpillar and we drew a Shark from the story Shark in the Park. The children enjoyed dressing up for World Book Day. They ALL looked AMAZING.
